I get this error trying to open a web created on W2003/IIS6/SPPS. .NET2.0 is installed with it;s own IIS App Pool. My web service web is assigned to that pool.
"Unable to open the Web 'http://server/site'. Server Error: The version of Windows SharePoint Services running on the server is more recent than the version of FrontPage you are using. You need a more recent version of FrontPage.
The web was created with VS2005 installed on the server, but I'd rather not have VS installed on the server as a requirement.

Also, what are you using to edit the site? Expression? VWD 2005? 2008? Sharepoint Designer?

Just to make it more clear to edit a sharepoint site you need to have the same version of frontpage extension in both server and the client from where you are editing. I think you tried this.
One more thing, before opening the site for editing it will prompt you with windows authentication the user you are using should have the privileges to edit the website.
If you have microsoft frontpage in client why can't you try editing using that. If it is also giving the same error you can take the help of eventlog and check what is the exact error.

Indeed, frontpage extensions 2002 has been installed on both server and client but as I have just said but it doesn't help.
It doesn't prompt anything, I guess because we use the windows authenticaiton and I have the right with my user to edit the website.
I don^'t want to use Microsoft Frontpage because I'm developer and I would like to use a developer tool -> Visual Studio

You are able to access the application through web browser from your client right.
whether it prompt you the credentials?
Did you check the event log in the server for the more information about the error.
Sep 08, 2008 03:05 AM|GillouX|LINK
yep I'm able to do so
nothing in the event log on the server

whether it prompt you for the credentials....
You know where will be the log file of the sharepoint application resides...
You can get the information from administrator website diagnostics... you can check that for more information...

I know where everything is located and there is nothing about that
I repeat that I never get the prompt for credentials and I don't understand why should I.
I open easly a sharepoint website with visual studio 2003 , without any prompt.
