(Microsoft Development Environment 2003 Version 7.1.3088, .NET Framework 1.1, XP 2002 SP 1)
I get a "random" error when attempting to build or run a project. On some occasions, VS will just disappear during the compile stage. No error, no nothing. It just disappears and I'm sitting here looking at my desktop again.[8-)]
It doesn't happen every time, but it probably happens 3 times out of 4. When it does not happen, my projects all build correctly and deploy and run fine. Sometimes when I reboot again its OK for a while, and then it starts again. It happens less often on
the PC with only 256M RAM and more frequently on my other machine (1G).
This happens to me on more than one computer, and to others I know also.
Any ideas gratefully accepted.

Although i am not sure what can be the cause of this problem, you can check the log for this.
Try to notice if some log file is made when it vanishes.

Thanks for responding but not really much help. There are several files which are modified or created during a build, but as far as I can see these are all binary and give no indication of what is going on.
Just to reiterate, Visual Studio just vanishes, no error, no message, no (readable) log file.
Any other ideas?

Thanks for your reply. Sorry it took a while for me to get back, but (weird as) it just stopped happening for a while. Anyway, I have it happening again now, and there are no errors (application, security or system) which appear in the event log.Visual Studio
gives no error message or log. It just vanishes.
I have discovered however, that its only happening with the web application projects. It appears that Visual studio sometimes "forgets"?? to connect to IIS when opening the solution and this is when it will fail.
Aalso, if I open DEVENV first, and then open the solution (rather than by double-clicking the .sln or .proj file), then it will compile and run OK everytime.
Just to recap, this happens for users in other environments, I have reimaged my machine and reinstalled everything on different machines, but this does not solve the problem.'
I'd love to hear any ideas...I'd be willing to try the VS2003 SP1 beta - but this will introduce other variables ....

Since the last post I have noticed that it no longer appears to matter which way the solution is opened (either from the .sln file or from DEVENV and then open)....It just appears random. Restarting the PC does not necessarily help. All files are under source
control, but rolling back does not appear to make any difference.
