Hello, I would like to create a different DNN websites for my clients, that will be mapped to different domains or subdomains. They would need to be separate from each other:
www.somecompany.com - corp dnn portal
john.someschool.com - dnn portal for student1
bill.someschool.com - dnn portal for student2
So each of domains and subdomains will be mapped into certain directory at hosting service.
Having said that, here's my questions:
1. Whats the difference between child and parent portals? What's the consequences and limitations of each?
2. Can I create portals outside of /DNN installation tree? Or they need to be there at all times?

as long as the DNS' are set-up to all point to the site where your dnn is installed then you should not have a problem at all.
1. I believe you can only have ONE parent portal with as many child portals.
2. You cannot create portals outside the DNN tree - plus, DNN creates them for you.
Hope this helps.
