I recently installed PWS after using Community Starter Kit for a few years - I have a large collection of photos and albums and performance is average when loading albums etc. Has anyone written some code to display the first x of y albums and the same for
photos? It would also be very nice to be able to order the display of albums from "Manage" as well .. :-)

I will be looking into paging for albums and photos shortly. As for the ordering of Albums, I have implemented Album categories.
Check out my recent post on the availability of my source code.

Date or by my own preference would be event better - so I'd like to only display for example 8 albums per page, and x photos per album .. etc

You can add an Order By to the Stored Procedures that are used on the albums page and the photos page.
As for paging with the albums page and photos page: Paging is not built into the Datalist which is the control used on both those pages. You would probably need to swap out the Datalist control. However, you could in fact use the datalist control with a
little work. Here is a good article by Scott Gu with a walkthrough, code, and downloadable source.
