That may be your experience but I'm not sure it is an accurate description. I've seen it drop on others as well, not just the first, so I think other factors are at work.
Those factors are what make the editor 'decide' to wrap the answer in a <P></P> which introduces an extra line break.
In the editor, switch from rich text to plain text and you can modify the html to get the result you want.
If that is what you meant by modifying code, so it's not what you wanted to do, then I don't have an answer. It's a slightly annoying little thing.
