A very common but weird error we get when trying to open/create asp.net applications using visual studio.net is "Visual Studio has detected that the specified Web Server is not running ASP.NET version 1.1. You
will be unable to run ASP.NET Web applications or services."
The resolution is simple, just re-register the aspnet user account. To do that, type the following from your command prompt:-
the above is based on .net 1.1 version. for other versions, just change the version number.
This will install the aspnet user account and register the asp.net with the IIS.

aspnet_regiis -i is actually not for re-registering the aspnet user account.
"Installs the version of ASP.NET associated with Aspnet_regiis.exe and updates the script maps at the IIS metabase root and below."

But, in case the ASPNET account is deleted accidentally or due to some reason, or if it doesnt have the necessary priveleges, if you run this command, it actually does what I mentioned.
It first of all creates the account. Registers the script mappings and provides the necessary permissions for ASPNET account to run ASP.NET Applications.
Hope this clarifies.

u do one thing,u check the version set by your iis web server by:
now in that window, select local computer node->website->your web directory
and then right click on it and go to property.
in that go to the asp .net tab and set your asp .net version which u r using and then try to compile and run your application.

in fact there was the problem, the "default web server" was stopped and that because it can't get along with Skype!!!!
I removed skype and it's O.k. now

In fact I am also using Skype. But removing it cannot be an option for me. [:(]
I have a web service project and IIS 5.1 which was running fine until last shutdown. When I opened it again today morning, my VS project started giving me the mentioned message. Then I checked the IIS default web site status
- It was stopped. When I tried to start it, it gave an error too. I searched on net for the error and fixed the web site problem by changing the default port to 180 from 80. I am not sure if I can use this port for web server. But at least, the default web
site is started. [:)]
I tried all the solutions proposed above ... but didnt help. After reading this post, I removed options of skype to use port 80 as alternative incoming port. After that tried to change the port of IIS to 80 and start again -- no success [:'(]
Still I am getting the error while opening my web service project in VS.NET 2003. Any clue?
