There are plenty of alternatives to the standard Solpart menu, look in the repository:

They all require you to adapt the skin (i.e. replace the solpartmenu skin object with something else)

I am not aware of any issues with Mozilla or Opera. Got a URL to look at? Also, what versions?
Regarding the size of spmenu.js, keep in mind that this is downloaded the first time only, all subsequent requests will use the cached version.

Now that was fun! got rid of 25Kb in 3 seconds flat.
Is this safe for all js files... and hence, what other DNN js is worth running through this... and also, what's the best way to reformat the js back again if some further work needs to be done?
The page also indicates it does CSS... are there any problems with that?

Yup I backed up the original before running it through that tool :)
I recall seeing a DNN addon that does something like this; I'll have a look for it.
