I know this is an old topic but after even going through this myself and knowing better :)
Are there any discussions of how to prevent this. What was the reason for not just keeping these values in the database?
Upgrades are the cause of many posts.

I'm going to assume that you are the admin or host based on the password being ***** when you did a password reminder. The majority of the info you need is in the pinned 3.1 Documentation - What's New (And Important). When you setup the release.config with
your database connection string did copy over the machine keys? If you've got a backup of your old web.config you can copy those keys into the one you made with the release.config and you'll be in business.
Brian, I can remember but I think it has to do with the membership provider. I'm pretty sure it's covered in the pinned post mentioned above.

I believe we should try first to propose a solution rather than hi-jacking the thread. The problem might have to do with what Mikeh36 says. The best thing to do is to restore the previous version and follow the proper method to upgrade.
The next best solution (in case you do not have a backup) is to register as a new user, copy the password and salt from the DB and copy them over your host/admin values. All users will need password reminders to regain access.

you probably don't need to revert all the way back to the previous version. Just copy the keys from the old web.config as mike said.
