Well, since my last post,, I have DNN 3.1 up and running, well, at least on local host. IT errors out over the net but that's a whole new topic and way down the road. Probably some rights or lack of integration issue.
The more that I work, the more that I realize how little I really know about this.
Like, how do I set up a development environment versus a deployment environment? Right now they are one and the same. I have an XP box as my primary personal computer and Windows Server 2003 with SQL 2000 running DNN. Where does my development environment
go and how do I then deploy it? I have searched all over and cannot find anything on this. Certainly I do not want to be modifying a running website. Is it 2 sites on server? CAN I develop in XP and then deploy to the server?
I have also seen some DNN web sites that are willing to assist for a rather nominal fee. Anyone suggest something like this?
I have so many requirements not being met by my basic approach to this portal via DNN/ Things like membership by invitation only that registered members can issue (this is a private famioy stie), , a functional calendar that can allow mass emails for entries
and birthday and calendared event reminders for members, a simple but elegant document management system. The basic skins are very dull; I need some robust architecture as I see in other sites..
Is it really possible for me to gather/implement these kinds of tools with a reasonable amount of effort? Do I have to be willing to code some of this? And if it involves extension of the source, where do I place my extensions? I would not want to code only
to lose everything in the next release.
Digging deeper. Any real help would be appreciated.

Is there any reason for me not to go to 3.2 immediately?
