I got caught by this one. Apparently, with DNN 4.0, if you unzip the source version you have to build it first before you can install, since the necessary DLLs are not supplied. This is an (undocumented) change from DNN 3.0.1
It looks as if you should download and install the Dotnetnuke_4.0.0_install.zip file first, and then work on the source version later when you have a site running. But the install.zip creates the website in the directory you extract to (ie. c:\dnn40) whereas
the source.zip creates the website in a website subdirectory (c:\dnn40\website), so be careful!
I presume you could unzip the install.zip file to c:\dnn40\website and it would then be easier to "migrate" to the source version later.
All the above is my guesstimate from only a short play with the new system, but I hope it helps.
