The MS article below is a good start for anyone interested in SQLServer2005, but it doesn't seem to depend on .net 2.0 - In fact they'd be mad to do that if you think about it. It has close integration with version 2.0 of the CLR is what the article says.
As to your other point, I'm pretty sure that multiple versions of .net can co-exist on the same machine, so you should be able to use .net 1.x and SQL2005 with DNN.

You mention that this info isn't in the DNN docs. There is a lot of stuff more important than that missing from the docs, let me tell you :-) But, you can get most, if not all of what you need by asking about it in here. And to be fair to the docs, they are
intended as guides, they can't cover every situation and future MS release.
