the aspnet_regiis -i solution did not work for me either.
When I compared the Application Configuration Mappings to a working XP Virtual PC, it was obvious that the .aspx file mapping, and over 40 others, just were not present in my faulty installation.
On my working PC I removed just the aspx mapping, and ran aspnet_regiis -i but it did not re-add the mapping.
I tried aspnet_regiis -s W3SVC which is supposed to re-add the mappings - but that didn't work either.
Finally, and with the knowledge I could always revert my Virtual PC to a previous state, I removed all mapping, and re-added:
aspnet_regiis -k W3SVC
aspnet_regiis -s W3SVC
This worked! It appears that most of the aspnet_regiis options will only modify mapping that are already present, but removing them all first forces it to re-add them.
Hope this helps someone.
