I recently had the same problem, just a dumb text instead of a nice treeview I was expecting. I don't know what caused this problem but I fixed it. Here is what you should do:
- check if there is a folder called webctrl_client under c:\inetpub\wwwroot. This folder contains the images needed by the treeview to display corectly. In my case this foder was missing.
- if that folder does not exist then download the IE Web Controls from
- run the setup that extracts the files on your disk.
- go into the installation folder and without compiling the controls (if you already have the binaries) just follow step 1 from 'To run the IE Web Controls' section:
Copy the contents of the Runtime directory to the webctrl_client\1_0
directory under your top-level site directory. For example, if your
site root is c:\Inetpub\wwwroot, type this at the command prompt:
xcopy /s /i .\build\Runtime c:\Inetpub\wwwroot\webctrl_client\1_0 /y
This will create the following directory structure under the site:
The only thing I did was to have this webctrl_client folder under c:\inetpub\wwwroot on my machine and the treeview is back again.
I hope it helps.
