Extending the Membership info can be done. But first I would check out the User Attributes module. It lets you modify this info without tweaking the core
On your second questions, you can just modify the usersOnline module (comes in the download) to get your desired results.
Your last question depends on the functionality you need on your website. DNN is a framework that you build upon. It has integrated membership, security, skinning, dynamic page generation, online authoring, etc...
If you need a 3 page website without this stuff then go ASP (ASP.net) or PHP. But why start from scratch.

I want to extend the default user information with more data, like an image, sex and a short description. Must I create/find/buy a new module for this, or is there a way of extending the default user information?
I then want to display "last logged-in user" on the start page, with a thumbnail and some extra data. Is it possible to edit the behaviour of "UsersOnline" to provide for this, by uploading a custom container-skin for example, or do I download and rewrite the
module itself, or (worst case) must I write a completely new module every time I'm not completely satisfied with the core-modules default behaviour?
