Take a look at the What's New module here:
Dave is doing just that kind of thing, utilizing the search mechnism to grab searchable items and filter them to provide a listing of items that are new (by date filter).

The IsSearchable method is what it is - no more no less, if you want custom methods to provider a better search, then you'll need to address it with a custom method. The kind of search you are talking about lends itself to a form for specifying query parameters,
but the original post pertained to less specific searches. At least that's the way I read it.

Well, XMOD says they'll look at adding ISearchable in a future release; I'll email Susanne from Catalook and hear if she wants to add this to the long wish list ... I can wait 6-8 weeks if need be, and I'm sure it will add a lot of value to both products.
How does it work when you have to add specific parameters - can the search direct only to a specific tabID (that's all I saw when I was scratching around the tables) - or does it have a way to direct to tabID=24&XMODID=104; or tabID=24&ProductID=228&View=A?
I'm guessing most modules would have this requirement - including the announcements.

I have a free DNN 3.x module that could provide the search capability to custom modules even when they have not implemented the ISearchable interface. This module works in conjunction with the core search. It's been tested with 3.0.12, 3.0.13, and 3.1.0.
Get it at http://ecktwo.eway.co.uk/Downloads/tabid/397/Default.aspx. Source is also available for free :)
For an explantion on how DNN search works see my explantion here:
