i have created a database DotNetnuke and changed th entries in web.config with the appropriate server /uid/pwd..

I've had this error before and there are many posts on it. But please check these items,
Double check your web.config. Make sure Server, Database name, uid, and pwd all match.
Make sure you have DBO permissions on the database.
If you aren't using a host, make sure you don't have a firewall which keeps your DNN from talking to the DB.
Finally, try deleting the DB and create a new one with the same parameters. Maybe due to an earlier error, the DB is hosed now.
Of all these suggestions I think its the DBO permissions you are missing.
