i'm very new to dnn and custom modules, so please bear with me if the answer to my question is blindingly obvious to you !
what i want to be able to do is consume data from a web service and display that data in a module.
i don't see an existing module that appears to fit the bill, so can anybody offer me any guidance regarding what i might need to do to achieve this please ? do i need to develop a custom module, and if so, what is the recommended way of telling a module
to use a web service instead of (?) the data provider to get the data it requires ?

To do what you want, you'll have to build your own custom module. There are some good articles here for a new user building a custom module
http://www.dotnetnuke.dk/. Also, in your case you are getting your data from a webservice, so you most likely won't need to build a data provider for your module so you can skip that part. You can just consume your webservice
directly in your module and display the data. Here is a link to some basic webservice information for starters
Hope this helps.
