i am assuming you have either 2.1.2 or 3.1.2
this app will install and run cleanly out of the box if everything is setup right.
ensure you are running....
win 2000 pro or server or xp pro ( i have not installed on win 2003 server)
.net framework 1.1 is installed not 2.0
mdac is installed to 2.6 or above
your sql server is installed and running properly or MSDE is up and running
use some tool to access your sql server to ensure you have it up and running
create your database in sql and leave it empty. be sure you know the username and password to get to it and it has all rights to the db
install plain vanilla as you appear to have done and taken all defaults. to install simply unzip with the extract option of winzip DO NOT SIMPLY SELECT ALL FILES AND DRAG TO A DIRECTORY. if you do this; the needed subdirectories will not be created.
assign your authority to your site. you needs lots of write authority. this is not a read only web site. get your web.config pointed properly to your sql database and change nothing else. if you think you changed something else.get out and start again.
you only have to change one line in DNN 3.1.2 to fix the sql pointer
goto to the IIS MMC and create your web site. point it to your dotnetnuke directory and do not forget to do the create application option. it will not work unless you do this.
it should run with no errors at this point.
