i want my layout to have a nav baron the left, which is fixed and until the screen gets to small, however the nav doesn't push the other elements to the left and is infront of them, how do i fix this?
also i have the nav to be on the left and have three main rows, header, content and footer, do i use a grid and put the nav in the grid on the left,or is there a better way?

Do you mean you are not trying to use frameworks?
If you don't want to use framework, you might need to consider below three HTML layout techniques.
You could check above three links to see if they are helpful or not.
Moreover, if you already have codes which could help us to reproduce the problem, please post it here and it would be helpful to target the problem more precisely.
Hope this can help you.
