i have a database server setup 'iis' with a SMTP virtual server, we currently aren't using this but would like to? and whoever set it up is long gone. what does a 'SMTP virtual Server' actually do , i can find all sort of info on how to set one up but nothing
informing me why i would want to. is a virtual SMTP essentially just a Relay..? or something else..?
would appreciate a nudge in the right direction here .

SMTP virtual server is a default server created when you install Microsoft SMTP Service to handle basic mail delivery functions.
SMTP virtual server automatically configures default settings so that it can accept local client computer connections and process messages.
SMTP virtual server actually means that you can email directly from your computer without having to relay through other websites. But only outward.
