I gave a look and you also have IMAP which allows to read mails and is enabled by default. So it seems you don't need to enable POP3 if you don't want to.
You had an authentication error when sending mail before enabling pop3 ? If yes, it could be related maybe to the https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en option
which would be enabled as well when pop3 is enabled ?
