This statement has me a little confused:
If isnull(@Status, ' ') = 'A'
I see it is checking a variable and if it is null than use a blank, otherwise compare the variable to ='A', is that right?

This means return the value of the variable @Status if @Status is not null. If @Status is null return two spaces.
isnull(@Status, ' ')
This part is checking for equality where X is the result the ISNULL method above.
X = 'A'
