I installed SSMS on a db server and get this error.
I log in with my network account using remote desktop. I tried logging in using Windows Authentication with my login grayed out and get this error. I don't know of any other way to login to SSMS.

I assume the database you are trying to connect to is not configured for Windows Authentication. Secondly, SSMS and SQL server do not need to be on the same server. You can use SSMS to connect to a remote server.
Try contacting the DB or system admin for assistance in getting setup and connected. If you have a username and password for the database, use that to connect.
