I installed dotnet core 2.0.6 on Unbuntu 16.04. Everything went smoothly.
If I type
Usage: dotnet [options]
Usage: dotnet [path-to-application]
-h|--help Display help.
--version Display the current SDK version.
--list-sdks Display the installed SDKs.
--list-runtimes Display the installed runtimes.
The path to an application .dll file to execute.
So far so good.
If i type > dotnet --info
Microsoft .NET Core Shared Framework Host
Version : 2.0.6
Build : 74b1c703813c8910df5b96f304b0f2b78cdf194d
Now if i type > dotnet --version or dotnet new console I get this error..
Did you mean to run dotnet SDK commands? Please install dotnet SDK from:
I clearly is installed.. What is the issue here??

It works now ? You tried that right after installing?
I just played with the "Windows Subsystem for Linux" and it worked but I remember that at some point they insist on opening a new command prompt...

--fix dotnet core in debian
1) remove all : sudo apt-get remove --purge dotnet*
2) sudo apt autoremove
3) reinstall dotnet core sdk : sudo apt-get install dotnet-sdk-2.1.101
4) run this command: dpkg-query -L dotnet-sdk-2.1.101
5) verify if this lib was installed - libssl1.0.0 ( this is a old version that not works with dotnet core sdk - Spotify use her ...) but when you remove , if there is a new version Spotify still running
--list libs installeds:
sudo apt --installed list | grep "libssl"
--remove a old lib version
sudo apt-get remove libssl1.0.0
6) verify dotnet commands run normally..
dotnet new console -n myapp

Did you install just the Runtime or whole SDK? Sounds like you just installed the Runtime..
See the following link:

you installed the .net core runtime instead of the sdk. the runtime can not create or build new projects (as the supporting utilities are not installed).

What error did you get after installed the SDK?
Could you share us a screen shot about your command?
