I want to be able to write text into a field on the admin part of a site so a control can read and display it on the page. The issue is there is formatting that needs to be done to the text and the person using it doesn't know html. Certain words need to
be different colors etc.. Does anyone know of any easy way to accomplish this. I'm wondering if there's some kind of control (preferable free) out there that he can format the text like a word processor and save it to a field whereby it will be read and formatted
by the control.

You can take a look at the AjaxControlToolkit HTMLEditor Extender controls.

An alternative option is to use CK Editor : https://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-4/

Or use rich area text fields to improve the appearance of text
The Editor includes options for changing font size, selecting a font, changing background color, modifying the foreground color, adding links, adding images, changing text alignment, and performing cut, copy, and paste operations.
