Is it possible to install Contoso database on SQL XE .
While installing it I am getting the message that only can be installed on enterprise edition.

You got it where? Usually sample databases are coming in multiple versions. Seems the one you got is intended to show also Enterprise level features...
See if they don't have a simpler version. At worst you would have to use SQL Server Developer Edition (which is free for development but should have all enterprise features) and then perhaps remove few things to make it compatible with Express ?

Ah so it seems this one is really to show data warehouse and business intelligence (DW/BI) capabilities which explains why an Enterprise level edition is required...
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/mvc/overview/getting-started/getting-started-with-ef-using-mvc/creating-an-entity-framework-data-model-for-an-asp-net-mvc-application creates a much simpler database with sample data if this is enough for you..
If you follow this with in particular
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/aspnet/mvc/overview/getting-started/getting-started-with-ef-using-mvc/creating-an-entity-framework-data-model-for-an-asp-net-mvc-application#set-up-ef-to-initialize-the-database-with-test-data you don't have even to download
a database. It will be created for you by the application.

Any other solution.

Depends what you want. If you want just a basic database to start Learning MVC I wopuld go for the code link I posted ealier which creates a very basic database. If you really want to test DW and BI feature you'll likely have to install the Developer Edition
rather than the Express Edition.
Or if suitable you have other samples at
https://msftdbprodsamples.codeplex.com/ that comes in multiple versions depending on how complex you want it it be. If I remember there is also a new sample that shows SQL Server 2016 features... Which kind of sample are yopu looking for?

I want o learn ef core 1.01.

So I would suggest to follow
https://docs.microsoft.com/fr-fr/aspnet/core/data/ef-mvc/complex-data-model which is similar to the EF6/MV5 link I posted earlier. The db will be just created from your code.
I don't see it right now but you likely have a downloadble project sample.
Edit: Ah they just provide a link from the starting pages at
https://docs.microsoft.com/fr-fr/aspnet/core/data/ef-mvc/intro which points to
Even if it doesn't come with a db, it should create the db when you first run this app (or follows the tutorial for instructions).
