I have a parameter that lets users choose which field to sort the report on.
I added a row group, adding the fields that I want to appear inside the group. I see my fields in the 'Row Groups' description at the bottom of my report in design mode.
I added this code to the function of the first field in that row group: ( "= IIF( Parameters!GroupedBy.Value = "location",Fields!Location.Value, Fields!.Date.value")...
Is that possible what I'm trying? Or, do I have to create two groupings for the row and apply one or the other depending on what the user selected for grouping?
I have found examples here and there, but they don't do exactly the same thing. I wanted to know if this was possible what I'm trying to do - before wasting too much of my time.

For you need, you could have a look at below article that provides a demo about dynamically group by selected value. Maybe they could give you some ideas for implementing your needs. About your method, I think you could have a try. Don’t worry about wasting
time on trying. After doing that, you could know whether it’s appropriate for you.

I took a look at the article, I'm going to try it out. It seems it's exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for your post.

I applied the grouping parameters for my report and it works great. I want to have a bar chart that shows the same data, and I want the category to be the group1 or group2 values, like the report. So, if I want to see a report grouped by date, I want to
have the bar chart category to be date as well.
I set the category value for the chart to be:
=iif(parameters!group1.Value = "logDate",Fields!LoggingDate.Value,Fields!Location.Value) for the "Group on" value, then for the lable I say: [@group1.Label]
When i run the reports with either option for group1 /group2, I see the label changes correctly, but no actual values appear.
What am I missing?

As your new need is a new issue in this thread, I suggest you’d better post this in a new thread for better help. Thank you for your understanding and support.
The following thread provides a method that’s about the SSRS bar chart grouping and you could refer to.
