I don't know how to explain the full compliment of problems I am facing so I'll simply dump information.
I am looking for a complete ASP.NET Identity (formerly Membership) VB.NET solution with SQL backend which I can examine to figure out how to know if a user is logged on, how to use redirection and basically how this all works with the code I already created
and copied in to the project.
I started a new VB web application with Individual User Account. I have my own database which has the Identity tables in it and I have users populating when they register and they can apparently validate against the stored credentials.
When I try to debug the logic, I get to the login page which traverses through OpenAuthProviders.ascx but my OpenAuthProviders.ascx control is looking for:
provider = Request.Form("provider")
which... is nothing because I'm not passing a provider in to this control.
additionally, my ReturnUrl is getting stomped out because my Site.css also has a page_load event. By the time the request gets back to the login page, all my carefully laid out thoughts go straight to hell.
I don't know what I'm doing but have to use Identity and need to learn quick. A fully functioning non-MVC VB.NET project is what I seek.

Welcome to the ASP.NET Forums.
About the function of “OpenAuthProviders.ascx”, you could take a look at the following article. The code will make an outbound call to the provider where a user can enter the login details and the provider will call back to the app’s return URL.
If you want to learn the ASP.NET Identity quickly, you could first refer to the following link that is about the recommended resources. You could also search some online ASP.NET Identity tutorials to learn what the ASP.NET Identity is and how it works by
yourself. About the “non-MVC VB.NET project”, you could get an expected one by adding a new built-in vb.net web form application in VS2013. This default project has a plentiful of functions. I suggest you’d better first learn the following link and then study
the default project, so that you could know the functions clearly.
I hope it’s useful to you.

I am still looking for a complete widget website which shows how to ensure users have authenticated properly and restricts those users who have not authenticated, redirecting to the login page.
I have found numerous examples (in C# - MVC) which deal with Identity but none which are complete solutions and frankly, I need VB not C#.
The concepts are fascinating - now let's get to some programming.
I want a simple SQL provider, cookies enabled example.
