There is no instruction on how to create "ASP.NET account" on this site.
If I do not have windows live account and do no wish to create a windows live account. Users do get this option to sign in: https://login.asp.net/login/signin.aspx?ReturnUrl=http%3a%2f%2fforums.asp.net%2f
On right hand side, it says: Sign in using your ASP.NET website account. Use this option if you do not have or do not want to use a Windows Live ID.
But, where and how to create asp.net website account?
When I go here and click "Join now": https://login.asp.net/login/signin.aspx
It still takes me to create a windows live account.

This website currently requires the use of a Microsoft account to create a new account. It's not possible to just create an ASP.NET website account.

So, what is the difference between signing in via "Windows Live account " VS "ASP.NET account" if both requires a Microsoft account?

early on (years ago) the site did not use Windows Live Accounts. So members here only used ASP.NET accounts back then.
For those members who signed up years ago and do have an ASP.NET account, they can still use that account.

This website predates Microsoft account, so there are a lot of members who never added a Microsoft account and we have not required that they do. In the (near) future we will likely be introducing oAuth, so other authentication besides Microsoft account
will be possible.
