Microsoft announced that visual studio community edition is free: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/announcing-open-source-of-net-core-framework-net-core-distribution-for-linux-osx-and-free-visual-studio-community-edition
I am a single developer of a startup and installed VS 2013 community edition around 6 months back, now it asks for the product key. Why?

As far as I know, to use the free version, you need to download and install Visual Studio Community edition. More information:

Are you 100% sure you are using the Community edition rather than the full product? Does it really ask for a product key or does it ask only for downloading a licence? AFAIK the Community Edition never asks for a product key but you have to download (and
maybe renew) your free licence (likely they want to keep track of basic usages beyond just downloading the Community edition).
