I was happily building my mvc5 app with EF connected to my DB for crud, when my boss said, "Use a service to connect to the database. I don't care how you do it." I have never worked with services before so I started researching. I have learned there is
WCF and WEB API but I can't tell which I should use. The web app and db are on different servers. It is an internal app. I may in the future have to develop a mobile version of the app (which is probably why he wants the service).
I'm leaning towards web api as it seems simpler. What do you think?

Use a service to connect to the database. I don't care how you do it.
The choice between WCF and Web API in ASP.NET will depend upon how you would like to use the service for your application. You can find the basic differences between them you can find at:
Also you will find some more helps from:
If you MVC framework, then for your database access I would suggest for Web API as you can write the service independent of the platform and devices, as the mobile apps popular today in different platforms using Web APIs.
Hope this will help.
