I have a new laptop that I need to install Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Studio 2012 on. Should I install both versions of Visual Studio before downloading the AJAX toolkit?
How will this work? Should I install two versions of AJAX one for 2008 and another for 2012, or would a current version of AJAX cover both of them. Thanks

If you don't have specific requirement to install both 2008 and 2012, I would suggest to go ahead with just one (latest) Visual Studio, i.e., 2012 as compared to 2008.
If that's the case you would anyway install only one AjaxControlToolKit.
I personally had all these confusions and have listed some of my findings on this thread:
Hope the thread I shared could help you to find more information.

I saw the latest version of AJAX toolkit was only for .Net framework 4 and above (Visual studio 2010 and above).
I ended up downloading two versions. 1) for framework 3.5 and the other a newer version for 4.0 and above.
Hopefully there will be no confusion. I will check out the thread. thank you.

You can use Nuget Package manager to install
Ajax Control toolkit into your Visual Studio 2008. You can check this article for more information:
