I want to have 1 to 1 chat in my webforms app and I want to have it work in a similar way to the Facebook chat thing that sits in the bottom right corner, or wherever I want to place it. I'd also very much like it if it could be there no matter what page
a user visits. So it might be coded to appear in the site master page above the footer for instance and would be in that position and updated no matter what page the user was on.
What would be involved in bringing that off?

You might want to check out Websockets:

As I understood it SignalR uses websockets but is not dependent on them. So if a browser or device doesn't support websockets then SignalR reverts to using a different technique such as Ajax.
I'm asking here because SignalR 2 is very new and there isn't much out there about it - especially for VB coders :-(

You can check my blogpost on how to implement one to one chat
Basically instead of using Clients. All to broadcast the chat message, you will use
Clients.Client(connection ID of the client here) to broadcast the message.
