I posted an answer in this thread:
Within roughly 30 minutes it was marked as answer by a 'total stranger', not by the OP nor by a moderator. How is this possible?
I'm aware that moderators can mark posts as answer, but they usually wait a couple of days / weeks. The problem is that OP probably has not even seen the answer or it might not be what he/she is looking for.
So question is who can mark posts as answer and what the guidelines are for the timeline if OP does not mark a post as answer?

MVPs are also allowed to mark replies. Although in general this sort of thing is left up to msft employees when a thread hasn't been marked for 3 days or so...

I will contact the 'total stranger' and request to unmark. 3 days or a week sounds fair.
