I have posted a similair question in another thread but thought that since its using partialpost backs and maybe ajax stuff I should retry it here.
This was my previous post
I think that when a updatepanel does a partial postback, asp.net sends all form field (also outside of the updatepanel) to the server and back again. Can I disable this behaviour?

Update panel always does that, to prevent that you need to use ajax callback, that will post required value to code behind, whereas update panel posts entire page including viewstate to page.

ok, so does that mean that you can never hold the cursor in the textarea at the right location if you have a updatepanel some where else on the page? is there absolutely no workaround?

yes, there is workaround, if you need to validate something (only JS thing), then on blur of textbox , do that operation and return false, so that page will not postback.
