We are in the process of upgrading our servers in the Load Balancer web farm to 2008. They are currently 2003. We want to gradually upgrade one server at a time. When we add a 2008 server the session state is getting jacked up.
The user can hit the LB and pick up 2008, then 2008 can pass state to 2003 no problem, but when 2003 tries to pass it back to 2008 it fails.

Sounds like maybe they have different LB algorithms so the user's sticky session is not being honored? I'm assuming you're doing sticky sessions and in-memory session state?

We had machine.config and applicationhost.config files that were not in synch. This was causing our issue.
