Please forgive me if this post is not in the correct location. Feel free to move this post, bash me or otherwise! In advance, I appreciate your taking the time to review my problem/question.
I created an relatively simple ASPX page using Visual Studio 2012 Professional Version 11.0.60610.01 Update 3, .NET Framework Version 4.5.560938 (Visual Basic).
The issue is not programming-related. It is more of a "how-do-I-make-this-work?" issue.
The program executes as expected when run from the IDE. However, after publishing the project, the ASPX file is not associated with any program (IE or Firefox, for example). The file appears to be a text file (text file icon). When attempting to open the
file, I receive the following error:
"The XML page cannot be displayed. Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the
Refresh button, or try again later. A name was started with an invalid character. Error processing resource."
<%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Inherits="projectName.WebForm2" %>
(above tag is included in error message)
One note of interest: I created a simple HTML "Hello World" page to be sure the file association is being made. This works fine.
Can someone please tell me how to rectify this? Have I deployed it incorrectly? Is there some setup in IIS/ASP.NET that has to be performed?
I am no web developer, by any means (obviously). I am more of a Windows-forms developer. I was asked to create an in-house web app for non-technical personnel to perform a specific task.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Again, I apologize if I am in the wrong place to post the question. Please advise.
Thank you for your help!

I receive the following error:
Internet explorer will not be able to intrepret the aspx page when it is opened directly from windows explorer. You need to open the page
http://localhost/Websitename/WebForm2.aspx which will be served by IIS and html will be displayed in the browser. If you want to understand the complete lifecycle of an ASP.NET web page, you can take
a look at the MSDN documentation.

You have to access your files via http;
Install IIS on your machine and create a site for it and make the root folder of the site the root of where you published your site too (or you can point it to your project folder).
Google for how to install IIS and how to create an IIS site. It's pretty straight-forward, there are lots of guides and tutorials if you search.
