We are outfitting a new web server to replace an older one that runs a VS.Net 2008 application that uses an Oracle Data provider.
The version runnning on the older server is Oracle Data Provider for .Net version 11.1.0620
On the newer server, should I look to install the same Oracle data reader (provider) version (if still available) or will it be safe to install a current one?
(I think they are up to 12 now?) I remember when we first got this program up and running it was kind of tempermental, then it finally worked.
And is the Oracle Client different from the Oracle data provider? Do I need to install Oracle Client first?
Obviously I am a little Oracle confused.

You can install the traditional unmanaged Oracle 12c ODP.NET with Oracle Client Installation option on the application server and use the unmanaged ODAC driver provided with the client copied to your /BIN folder of the application with LOCAL reference (bitness
and version .NET must match).
The 12c Client can communicate with 11g or 12c Oracle databases.
Optionally there is now a MANAGED 12c ODP.NET with the Oracle client built into the driver (all .NET), but being new, people are still finding bugs in certain environments, especially servers with special security lockdowns, and certain function calls.
