I wanted to make a contribution for anyone who has a VPS using Plesk Panel.
If you intend on connecting your application to an SQL installation elseware on your server, here's an easy way to connect to it without using Plesk to manage the connection. On my Plesk installation, I only have the option to connect to a MySQL db and to
use Plesk (the intended way) to connect to MS SQL, I would need to upgrade my installation, thus shelling out more money.
If you try connecting with the default configurations, you may get an error similar to this...
If you have successfully installed MS SQL on your server (in my case SQL Express 2012), you can use Windows authentication to connect to it. In plesk, I added my connection string like so and then removed it from web.config...
myconstring Data Source=servername\SQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=LocalHostDevelopment;Integrated Security=True
Plesk has a u/n established in Windows Server so you want to make sure and add it in SQL Server. The name should be in a similar format to this...
In SQL server add the username and set permissions like this...
1) I created the user "servername\IWAM_plesk(default)" under logins, using Windows Authentication.
2) Grant the user full access in "Server Rolls" and "Securables"
You should now be able to connect to your MS SQL server from your application within Plesk Panel.
