Does anyone know why the "paste from word" capability no longer works? It is an unnecessary pain to have to open the html window each time I want to do a simple paste.

First, what tool are you using as Microsoft has several? Also, what tool did the Paste From Word work in for you? If they are the same tool (such as VS) please specify the version in each case.

I'll seperate this answer into two sections, as I am not sure if you are referring to this forum or some other issue that you are experiencing.
On this Forum
Keep in mind that pasting from Word can often be quite tricky as it can add many different styles that may not be valid HTML, which is why it is often necessary to use a specific button to handle pastring from Word (as is present in this forum).
Pasting from Word is likely not the most common use-case, which is why a button is available for handling it. This button is also important because
contents pasted from Word would need to be treated differently to be pasted into an HTML Editor (certain tags must be removed, replaced and altered to ensure that the contents are posted properly and retain some of the styles).
I hope that helps clarify things a bit. I understand that it can be frustrating to have to handle that extra click, but that is often the case when the actions that you are performing are not the primarly use.
Outside of this Forum
I'm assuming your a using an editor control or a related third-party text editor. (Could you elaborate a bit more on your situation?)
Many of them will often have a setting indicating if anything pasted should be pasted as "plain text" or not and you'll often need to set the property to false in order to handle that.

I am talking about the forum. Before three weeks ago if you did a right click paste or control v'ed or clicked on the paste from word button a dialog box would open with a window in which your cursor would be present and you could control v to paste you
content in the window which would then be inserted. I am not really concerned about maintaining format, I just don't want to have to type my whole thread entry all over again when we lose our internet connection (as happens so very often on base.) However,
for the last three weeks, when the window opens, you can't paste anything into it. You can't even put your cursor into it.
This was such a useful capability, a serious advance on the MSDN forums. So I don't understand why they would take it away.

What browser are you experiencings these issues in?
As I have not had any issues regarding content even from Microsoft Word being pasted into this area (using CTRL+V or Right-Click + Paste). Have you tried just pasting your content directly into the editor as opposed to selecting the Paste From Word

I have been having to open the HTML editor and paste in there and add tags as needed. This is occuring in IE 8 on Windows 7 in the Navy's mandatory configuration.

So what happens when you try to just use CTRL+V to Paste your Clipboard contents into the Editor? Does the Modal window appear and prompt you to use it?

Dear asp.net redesigned recently. So might be it has issue with older version.
I recommend you to update your browser as IE10 is available and Always use latest versions of browsers.

He stated that it is a restriction that he is unable to upgrade from IE8.
Are you able to use any browsers outside of IE?

I am seeing the same bug in IE9 / Windows 7. We'll look into this.
Can you try pasting from Word right into the editor? That should work and still strip out most of the extra junk from Word.

I ran into an issue similar to this using CKEditor (although these forums use MCE) that involved disabling default pasting as plain text to fix it (however this was only targeting IE and didn't involve a pop-up).
Pasting directly into the browser as Terri mentioned should work though.

The above describes what happens when you control v in the message space. Regarding browsers, no other browsers are allowed. If you think it is a browser issue, I will try it at home where I have IE 8 on Windows 7 but without the Navy's set up parameters
and also have Firefox. (It will be so sad if its just that MS's own website can't be read on MS's own tools.

As stated above I cannot paste directly into the editor. Attempting to do so only opens the stupid "paste from word" window.
The only way a paste can be carried out is to open the html view and paste in there and manually type in the appropiate tags. Tiresome and tedious.

Ahhh. now i see. your browser is set to block programatic clipboard access. when the ctrl-v is used with tinymce (the editor used here) and tinymce cannot read the clipboard, then the paste from word dialog is automatically launched.
Given your locked down configuration (no programatic clipboard access) and the current issue with the paste from word dialog, i cannot see another work-around for you at the moment.

Thanks for the further explanations and analysis Mike and Edward. Now I better understand and we will work to resolve it.
In the interim, as something of a workaround you should be able to use this
Word to Clean HTML tool to paste in your content from Word/Outlook/posts/wherever, and it outputs HTML that you can then copy and paste into the HTML window. It's extra steps but it maintains formatting/links/etc.

We deployed a fix for this problem last night. You should now be able to paste from Word successfully.
