Ive been searching around the net to see how i could setup firstly a test environment to use https (as in a secure connection) when i test locally and then how to do this on a server (Windows Server 2008 R2) using IIS, I would be using the ASP .Net membership
Could anyone guide me please?

You could check at
http://www.iis.net/learn/manage/configuring-security/how-to-set-up-ssl-on-iis. To use a SSL certificate you should have a dedicated IP address. The certificate is issued for a particular domain name.

ssl is working between your (client machine) to server, to pass your user id and password or other information in secure mode.
but ASP.net membership is working as user wise means user userid and passwords, role, administration etc. so both are different.
