Looking at the HTTP Response Headers of a couple of ASP.NET applications, I see strings such as "ASP.NET Version 2.0.50727" or "X-AspNetVersion:4.0.30219". Is this included by IIS and identifies the version of the .NET Framework specified for the application
pools these apps are running in or is it set in the application code or by Visual Studio?

You can create app_pool or use existing app_pool to configure which net version you are using for your application. Choose appropriate net version when configuring your app in IIS.

First you need to have .net 2.0 or 4.0 installed on the server, then you can go to iis manager application pools to check/configure what version you like to assign to which pool.
