I am trying to publish a web app from my network PC to our IIS6 or IIS7 servers and get the error below. How can I resolve this? Thanks.
Web deployment task failed.(Remote agent (URL
http://lifedevr2/MSDEPLOYAGENTSERVICE) could not be contacted. Make sure the remote agent service is installed and started on the target computer.)
Remote agent (URL http://lifedevr2/MSDEPLOYAGENTSERVICE) could not be contacted. Make sure the remote agent service is installed and started on the target computer.
An unsupported response was received. The response header 'MSDeploy.Response' was '' but 'v1' was expected.
The remote server returned an error: (403) Forbidden.

There is a big difference when you want to deploy application on local machine and when you want to deploy it on a remote web server.
In case of local machine, you can easily store it on a local drive but if you want to deploy it on a remote server, you should have a web site, you would need a FTP/FrontPage account, IP address of web server/FTP server etc.
You can connect remote server by FTPing web site using FTP account and publish the web site content.
You can use the same login details in VS to upload content on server.
hope it helps you.

I would check two things, first please make sure both machines have the same version of MSDEPLOY installed. Second on your destination server please make sure that the "Web Deployment Agent Service" is started in the Services control panel. By default the
"Web Deployment Agent Service" is not started and set to Manual.

Through trial and error I found a solution. I wanted to use the file system to copy everything and I had a mapped drive pointing to the website folder (e.g. R:\Websites) and it was failing. Then I changed it to use the full server url (e.g.
\\server\share\) and the copy worked. I have no idea why the mapped drive did not work but at least it is working. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem.
