previous versions of VS you just went straight to create new web service in the new project box. Now it seems it is only in the WCF menu. So you now have to create a WCF service. Has WCF service replaced web service? Meaning now you have to used the WCF
framework? Are there any difference?

I have just worked out what has happened. You need to click on .net Framework 3.5 as web service is not listed under Framework 4.0. By the way whats the difference between creating a standard web service and creating a WCF service?
