I have several thousand links stored in an XML file that is read by a page with a gridview. I would like to have users hover over the hyperlink to show a preview of the page in another area on the page. If the user clicks on the link, a new page will open
. Could someone show/tell me how to get started?

There are 2 approaches.
1. Use a plugin like qTip that references a service that provides image snapshots of the page - http://craigsworks.com/projects/qtip/demos/content/thumbnail
Not always up to date (if you rollover the demo, the pages are not the most current).
2. Use an iFrame to actually load the URL link. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3162815/jquery-webpage-preview
This will almost always be slower than #1, but is always up to date.

According to me the logical solution is to just load the target webpage as a popup window. You can use many of the Lightbox-class plugins for this task, particularly the ones which allow you to target arbitrary HTTP content for the Lightbox window.
In that pop up window you need to open relavant image on hover of the URL.
