From what I've read, they seem extremely similar. I am having problems understanding the differences between the two.

They are similar, but serve a different purpose. The purpose of the provider model is to allow for customization through an abstract class or interface, like the Membership Provider. The purpose of the repository pattern is to allow a developer
to abstract away the details of an underlying database, like the Customers table in a database.
