We cannot remove the SQL session state from our DB (we don't have an SQL server locally to use, only express), we are moving our DB to a new host. Do you know if we simply modify our web.config to no longer include the mode = "SQLServer" that it will just
use the default session state?

You can modify your web.config to use InProc and it should work just fine. What you do with the session db is up to you after that. Changing this in your web.config will cause the website apppool to recycle and users who are currently logged in or using
Session will lose their session data until they log back in or access whatever page you need them to in order to set your session variables.

Use InProc for "mode" in the following link:
If you go into VS, and create a new web application, you can look at the default setting in web.config for sessionState and copy that to your current web.config, and that will solve it.
