I am about to rebuild my developer machine running Windows 7.
I am about to install SQL Server Developer 2005 and Visual Studio Professional 2008.
I wish to make sure that BIDS is up and running successfully after installation.
I do not require a SQL Express installation.
Can you inform me of the correct installation sequence i.e. SQL servver or VS 2008 first.

It's good to install first the SQL Server 2005 . Visual Studio always have a in-built SQL Server express whose instance got installed after the VS installation seperately.
Henceforth, it's always good practice to install SQL Server 2005 Standard/ Enterprise/ Developer/Evaluation or express with Advanced series first in the system which will install Report server with VS shell. For which you will get BIDS successfully installed
in your system after the installation of SQL Server.

they are independent products, and should operate fine regardless of the order of install or uninstall.

No need for sequencing you can install in either order.
