in the old design, we would see a visual cue like: "inbox (1)"
now, in the new design, we must click a dropdown.
is there any visual cue in the new design? if not, i predict that many PM's will not get noticed.

However, I was planning to put the same comment as you. For years there was no visual clue and for some time we had an indication which I liked. The current redesign hides it again which is unfortunate. I like the clean space right now so there shouldn't
be the word Inbox again but just having the (1) indication behind your name/avatar to indicate something would be a nice feature.

personally, i'm not comfortable with it being a "feature suggestion".
imho, given that it apparently was accidentally dropped during the switch over to the
new design, it really ought to be logged as "we broke it, let's fix it before Christmas 2011".
From a QA perspective, imho, it should have been caught by a unit test or at least a human with a checklist of festures added to date.
imho, it's a big deal because private messages will be missed, guaranteed.

The functionality is present, so this was NOT accidentally dropped. You are just unhappy with its new location, therefore this is a feature suggestion.

Terri ... you are indeed correct about the functionality being present ... unfortunately, as Kris has mentioned at
http://forums.asp.net/t/1750250.aspx *, it's also
invisible.
Quoting Kris: "with the site upgrade the possibility to view a certain number of unread posts in the Inbox has
vanished. Since this happened I noticed that most people don't read their messages that I sent them anymore as they're likely not aware of it."
Making the feature invisible was imho an absoutely aweful design decision.
Yes, i am "unhappy with its new location" with good reason.
FWIW, i'm hoping i'll win the lottery and i'm hoping that the visibility will be restored in time for Christmas 2011 because, otherwise, there'll be nothing under the tree at all for me.

why not?: Signed in as
gerrylowry (n)
where n represents the number of unread
private messages and/or replies in my PM inbox.
Reason: my hunch is that PM's have lost much of their usefulness.
Let me explain: i'm taking a course where i am required to survey computer programmers as part of the course requirements; it's a job retraining program and i've asked many people ... we have a minimum quota.
via PM, i individually asked about 15 to 20 of my peers here at forums.asp.net that i've come to know well ... when i look at my PM inbox, i see that that a large majority have not yet been read.
Also, one member who responded said it was about a year since he last checked his inbox.
i'm guessing that i check more frequently than many members, yet even i miss PM's ...
others and myself have raised this issue several times.
it has been mentioned that Neudesic is doing a site update in May ... i really, really, really hope that this small, easy to implement feature request will be implemented soon ...
if not, other members and myself will continue to be frustrated when our peers do not even realize that they have PM's waiting in their PM inboxes.

We reinstituted the email notifications for private messages on January 28, so that should help raise visibility. We are working with design to rework the site header in the next 1-2 months and we'll see if we can work in the private message indicator.

Terri ==> is that the FIRST PM from someone, or also
REPLIES too?
FWIW, i've searched all my e-mail folders BUT found only ONE notification from this March 9th ... i had a new message February 19th but i can find no notification for that message.
i will be tweaking my Outlook 2010 filters so that i do not miss any messages ... i'll be looking for this subject:
"Please Have a Look (ASP.NET Forums Private Message)"
Personally, i'd rather see:
"Please Have a Look (ASP.NET Forums Private Message) from _________"

Terri, that would (a) be wonderful & (b) delight many of us.

We deployed an update tonight which will now update the site header when you have unread private messages. The notification is a number in a red/pink box to the left of your user avatar.

It seems during changes, something went wrong as when you hover on your avtar, it will show menu contraining "My Threads", which is missing href when you're viewing any particular thread or in the main forum listing. Please do the needful.

will the issue of buried PM notifications be resolved soon by making them more visible soon?
Mar 26, 2013 04:04 AM|gerrylowry|LINK
Scenario: at the upper right, AFAIK, of ALL ASP.NET pages, including forums.asp.net, i see:
