You can set session timeouts in the web.config file or in Global.asax file's Session.Start() function. below is the way to set in global.asax:
protected void Session_Start(object sender, EventArgs e)
Session.Timeout = 60;
here is webconfig way
It is set in minutes;So 60 minutes means i hour.you can calculate as much as you want .

Timeout = 60;
If I mention only the string value of
the session will remain open
for 60 minutes?

No, Actually Session has Application level Scope;I mean you can't keep session open for one sesion [string][as you mentioned].Once you set
session Timeout it is for all session values.i mean everey session value will get cleared after 60 minutes .Again i want to make it point that WE CAN'T MAKE IT FOR ONE SESSION VALUE. Session values of entire application get cleared after timeout.

Maximum timeout is 525,600
To test set timeout = 525601
and it will give error the session timeout value cannot be larger than one year
